A breathtaking photograph is gaining traction online after a hiker captured a rare natural phenomenon during a New Year’s Day climb.
Rhys Pleming, an avid hiker, decided to welcome January 1 by scaling Snowdon, the highest peak in England and Wales. His goal was to witness the first sunrise of the decade, accompanied by a friend. However, what they encountered exceeded all expectations.
Not only did Rhys get to see the sunrise, but he also experienced something extraordinary—a rare phenomenon known as the Brocken spectre.
Rhys’ stunning photo shows what appears to be a figure walking through the clouds, surrounded by a circular rainbow of light. The ethereal image has left many viewers in awe.
According to reports, this otherworldly sight occurs when the low sun shines behind someone who is looking into mist from a higher elevation. The person’s shadow is then projected forward, creating a silhouette against the rainbow, giving the illusion of a figure within the clouds.
Rhys shared his experience with North Wales Live, saying, “There was only a 50/50 chance of seeing the sunrise because of the cloud, but my friend and I decided to go up anyway.”
He continued, “My friend was slower, so he told me to go ahead. I reached the summit around 8:15 a.m. and started taking pictures of the sunrise. There were a few others there too. About an hour later, when my friend arrived at the top, the Brocken spectre appeared. It was perfect timing. Just pure luck.”
It may have been luck, but the resulting photograph is nothing short of spectacular, capturing a moment that few ever get to witness.
